Ferrous iodide is first formed, which gradually gives place to oxide. No further details in source.

Aa. 11. Twist barrels.

Working instructions. (b). Let browne stand for a few days after making up. Apply 4 times in each 24 hours, scratching after each application, and repeating until dark enough. A small addition of arsenic (L. acidum arsenicosum, Fr. popularly “mort aux rats,” G. “Giftmehl”) before the last pass darkens the colour. After last scratching, rub in a mixture of beeswax, boiled linseed oil and turpentine, first with cloth, finishing with the hand.

At room temperature this browne acts very slowly: on soft steel it gave a greyish-black, on hard steel a deeper brownish tone, the parts being steeped in hot logwood decoction (30 grs. per U. S. quart) but not boiled. Arsenic is practically insoluble in the browne.

Aa. 12. Black browne.
